Dogs currently in need of foster homes
Our City Dogs Foster Program works with foster homes in the Washington, DC metro area, including parts of Maryland and Northern Virginia. By fostering a dog or cat, you are enabling City Dogs & City Kitties Rescue to pull an animal from a high-kill shelter.
We request a minimum of a two-week foster commitment but prefer our fosters to have the pet up to the point of adoption. Many of our dogs and cats are adopted within a couple of months; however, we cannot guarantee this timeline. Sometimes they are adopted more quickly and sometimes they take longer to find forever homes. If you have travel plans, let us know and we can make appropriate arrangements.
City Dogs & City Kitties Rescue pays for all pre-approved vetting and provides you with a crate, “Adopt Me” vest, collar, leash, harness and other supplies, if needed, when you foster a dog. You provide a home, loving care and food (and taking your foster to vet appointments as needed). To learn more about our cat foster program, please visit our City Kitties foster page.
All of the dogs listed on this page need foster homes. They are eligible for adoption at any time.

Foster needed to start now
DOGWOOD: Beagle/boxer mix, male, 7 months, 37lbs. Good with dogs, may do best in a home without cats. Fun, playful guy who is working on house training. SAYLOR: Hound mix, female, 2 years, 52lbs. Good with cats, would do best as an only dog. Cuddly, expressive, and enthusiastic pup who loves to go outside, curl up with you on the couch, and sit for treats. Makes a great jogging partner. She would love a foster willing to work through some leash reactivity, but she is super eager to learn and has been improving on meds! No accidents, fine crated. TWIX: Boxer mix, male, 5 years, 50 lbs. Sweetheart who loves to play tug and is a fast learner. Would do best as an only pet in a quiet area in a home without young children.
Temporary foster needed
NEEDS FOSTER 8/6 – 9/4 OLIVER: Retriever/hound mix, male, 1 year, 40lbs. Sweet and playful and happy to snooze while his foster is working. House trained, fine crated. Needs new foster 8/6 or temp from 8/6 – 9/4 NEEDS FOSTER 8/8 – 8/19 ZOE: Hound/feist mix, female, 1 year, 31 lbs. Doing well with house training, better when confined to an area rather than crated. She would do well in a quieter area or with a yard because she is scared to potty outside when nervous. Smart, snuggly, and perfect for an active home. She is great with cats and would do best as an only dog or with a very friendly dog as she can be scared of other dogs.
