The Sad Truth About Buckshot in Rescue Dogs

12/7/2012

These four dogs came to City Dogs Rescue with shotgun residue.
How could anyone shoot these beautiful animals?
Picture
Today, we learned that Moby has at least 20 pellets in his body.
In the past year, City Dogs Rescue has saved at least 5 dogs from North Carolina who have buckshot or in Sawyer's case bullet fragments in their bodies.

What is buckshot?
Buckshot is a form of ammunition that is used for big game like deer.  If anyone can tell us why a dog would be riddled with buckshot, we welcome the opportunity to learn why this seems to be an epidemic faced by shelter dogs.
PictureHayden wouldn't harm a soul.
It is always deeply upsetting when we learn that one of our rescue dogs has been shot.  For example, Mystic (formerly Marble) had at least 6 pellets in her body.  Earlier this year, Brody was brought to the shelter with an embedded collar and wounds from buckshot.  Another alumni, Sawyer had severe complications with his ankle as a result of being shot with a .22 caliber. Hayden was rescued in February and also had buckshot.

Moby's x-ray shows at least 20 pellets.
Today, we learned that one of our foster dogs Moby (formerly known as Carson from Bladen County) has been shot at 20 times! In the case of Moby and Mystic, they were fortunate enough to not require surgery for removal.  These dogs are the only ones where we knew they had been shot.  Unfortunately, it is probably more common than we know.

Please spread the word that it is not okay to shoot a dog. It is sad to know that the scars of being shot will always be able to felt in these dogs.  Hayden, Mystic, Brody, and Sawyer all found their forever homes. Moby is still available for adoption!

I adopted a dog from Tennessee who was found abandoned in the woods with her 8 three week old pups. If that wasn't bad enough her X-rays revealed about a dozen buckshot pellets.

Two weeks ago my neighbor shot two of my dogs, killing the smaller one. I rushed the larger one to the ER and they were able to stablize him. He had gone into shock. A pellet wen through a bone in his back leg, he has multiple wounds including one dangerously close to his abdomen, and one of the pellets is just above his spine. He has pellets in his chest and in his back. There were 3 shots. We live on 35 fence acres with non climb horse mesh on three side. On the neighbor's side HE CHOSE to use barbed wired strung 4 inches apart. This dog was a baby and could hurt nothing. He claimed that the night before that dog killed his baby goat. That dog was in bed with me all night, and if he goes out at night I wait for him to return. There is a fence around the house that is completely fenced with four sides of non climb horse mesh. This dog had fallen off of the porch and dislocate his hip. After sevarl attempts to put it in, unsuccessfully, the vet had to remove the ball of this hip. This was a disabled dog.

Sounds like your neighbor is in dire need of some wall to wall counseling.

My rescue lab's x-ray looks like Moby's. He's from southern Illinois.

The wrong one would lose in speed and power. The ball must travel very fast (at least 60 MPH) so that the batter won’t have time to react in time to hit the ball

We just found out our rescue dog had been shot as well. According to our vet, the worst they've ever seen. What are the potential dangers of this?

Did your dog make it? I see this post was from a couple years ago. We just learned that our sweetest boy was shot in his earlier life before we adopted him. We are scared of cancer from lead. Not sure if that happens frequently or not - our vet was also unsure. Lots of love to you and your furbaby.

My dog has had buckshot removed from both ears. He has a scar on his nose also. He has had a surgery to remove s damaged salivary gland and resulting mass. We The vet thinks there is more shrapnel in him. He was rescued as a stray in Southern Virginia. The sweetest, least aggressive dog ever. Please call animal control rather than shooting dogs to get them off your property.

Maybe you can't spend as much time with your furry best friend as you'd like. Maybe you can't be home in time to give your dog his much needed relief (for some strange and unfortunate reason, we humans have to work to earn money...well most of us do anyway).

I'm so sorry about your baby. We had very similar situation recently with our 11 year old pitbull. We went to police and states attorney daily and the officer on duty at time was great to our family in getting his part done to a T. Keep calling police tell them you're calling ASPCA , states attorney, etc and your baby deserves justice. Best wishes to you. I feel your pain.

It's sad that people are abandoning their pets this way. In my opinion a complete bond between a person and a pet is must to have a healthy ongoing life.

I just adopted a rescue Border Collie mix, brought up from Kentucky to Ottawa, Canada. He has over 40 pieces of shot in his lower body. My vet was shocked to see this ... very uncommon here. I asked about a CT scan to see if any particular pieces are worth removing surgically, e.g. if affecting his hips. He wasn't sure. Any thoughts?

Our 12 year old Pitbull was shot with #4 by the guy next door to my sons when he wasnt anywhere near the guy or his house. He was across the street playing with the old ladies poodle. The shot sprayed him from head to toe and had severe internal injuries so my son had to make the unfortunate decision to have the vet put him down so he wouldnt suffer. He was literally drowning from his internal bleeding. That dog never hurt or went after a single soul. Matter of fact he slept in my newborn grandsons doorway n when he would make a sound Rascal would go get Daddy or Mommy. Not all pitbull dogs are bad. It's the owners who make or break the breed. He was part of our family. The neighbor currently has warrants for this and we are pushing it to the fullest so if anyone has advice on who all we can contact to get the most justice for Rascàl and punishment for this guy please comment.

Our rescued mini Doxi-Pin was found on a highway in Georgia. He made his way to me in Massachusetts through the Sweet Paws Dachshund Rescue. He also had bb shots in his body near his spine. Only a low life looser would get their jollies from shooting at a helpless animal.
My pup Smiley, as we call him, is the sweetest gentlest dog and only wants to be loved. I’m so grateful I found him.
